SERVE-AG NRM GROUP

SUPPORTING BEST PRACTICE MANAGEMENT OF WATER QUALITY
AND SALINITY IN NORTHERN TASMANIA

Serve-Ag’s NRM Group has been contracted by NRM North to deliver a 12-month project assisting landholders implement changes to land management practices which have a positive effect on water quality and soil salinity in northern Tasmania.

We are working closely with three groups of farmers to deliver the project in the following areas:

  • Deloraine
  • Pipers River
  • Scottsdale

Activities include local on-ground demonstrations, information sharing and regular monitoring, to increase their understanding of water quality and salinity issues, and help them take action where problems exist.

The  ‘Plan – Do – Check – Review’  Cycle

Each group has identified their land-management issues affecting water quality and salinity in their local areas, and have begun to address these through on-ground trials and actions, training workshops and ongoing monitoring.

Examples include:

  • Improving landholders’ understanding of local soil salinity, its causes and use of management tools and tactics.
  • Assisting farmers improve water use efficiency through demonstration of improved irrigation practices.
  • Improving soil structure and reducing erosion to minimise sedimentation, nutrients and pesticides entering waterways from farming activities.

Field days and other activities in conjunction with NRM North will disseminate information more widely to landholders throughout Tasmania.

What Will Be The Project Outcomes?

  • Water Quality – Improved water quality through adopting practices which reduce movement of soil, nutrients and pesticides into local waterways.
  • Soil Health – Implementation of practices which protect and enhance soil condition and long-term sustainability, such as maintaining soil organic matter and reducing erosion.
  • Salinity – Understanding of salinity management options and practices; provision of local management guidelines for land at risk of salinity.
  • Productivity – Increased understanding of the positive impacts that improved water quality and soil condition can have on the environmental, social and financial aspects of primary production in northern Tasmania.
