Command 480EC Herbicide
Introduction
Command 480EC Herbicide, containing 480 g/L of Clomazone, is a residual herbicide for the control of economically important broadleaf weeds. It is currently registered in a number of countries (including the USA, Brazil, New Zealand and certain South-east Asian countries) for pre-emergence weed control in a range of crops such as soybean, tobacco, canola, sugarcane, rice, beans, potatoes and cucurbits. Registration in Australia is for cucurbits, green beans, navy beans, potatoes and tobacco, as well as the unique use as an early post emergence herbicide in poppies.
Command Herbicide Chemistry
Being an entirely new compound for Australia, clomazone, the active ingredient in Command has unique characteristics for optimum weed control. A combination of high water solubility, a high degree of adsorption to soil particles, and entry into weeds through both shoots and roots are the bases of some of the unique features of Command herbicide.
Highly Soluble in Water Works in Dry Soil
The high water solubility of the active ingredient in Command herbicide means that minimal soil moisture is needed to activate the product against emerging weeds. This provides better early season weed control than most other pre-emergent herbicides. This feature, coupled with the absorption of the active ingredient through the shoots of emerging weeds, also means that Command does not have to be placed in the root zone to ensure weed control even under dry conditions. However, as with all pre-emergent herbicides, adequate soil moisture ensures improved product effectiveness.
Minimal Movement in Soil Means Longer-Lasting Control
While the active ingredient in Command herbicide is highly soluble in water, its mobility in soil is very low due to the strength of its adsorption to clay and organic matter in the soil. Command has moderate movement in sandy soils with low organic matter and clay content and minimal movement in loam/clay soils with higher clay and organic matter content. This means that the active ingredient in Command - even with its high water solubility which provides superior early season control - does not leach appreciably in the soil. The active ingredient remains in the root zone of weeds to provide long-lasting control even through periods of high rainfall.
Weeds Controlled
While Command 480EC is known to control a range of weeds, registration in Australia is for pre-emergence control of economically important weeds such as , Apple of Peru ( Nicandra physalodes), Potato weed (Galinsoga parviflora) , Blackberry nightshade (Solanum nigrum), Fat hen (Chenopodium album) and Amaranthus (Amaranthus powellii)(suppression only). In addition, troublesome weeds occurring in Poppies will be controlled including Amaranthus, Fat Hen, Hogweed (Polygonum aviculare), Wild Radish (Raphanus raphanistrum) and Stagger Weed (Stachys arvensis).
